Late afternoon at Saguaro Ranch Park in Glendale, Arizona produces some interesting shadows. I didn’t do any manipulations to this photo.

In case you can’t read the text at this size (the text looks great on the wallpapers), it is:

To find the universal elements enough; to find the air and the water exhilarating; to be refreshed by a morning walk or an evening saunter … to be thrilled by the stars at night; to be elated over a bird’s nest or a wildflower in spring - these are some of the rewards of the simple life.

Luckily I had my camera with me when I got done playing a Christmas service at Grace Bible Church in Sun City. I didn’t do anything to the photo except crop away the parking lot and television antennas.

Extensive mashing-up with Photoshop was done here… I used my own photo from a trek to the Desert Botanical Garden Butterfly Pavilion.

I overlaid a texture from Wetzel & Company (MSWP-36) after converting it to black & white. ThenI added a levels layer to darken the whole photo, masking the butterfly and making a bit of a god beam to shine on it. Then I copied that levels layer and changed the blend mode to dissolve. The opacity is set very low so the effect is very subtle. And last, the text from Teri Martin’s quote subscription list.

I used Photoshop to darken the background, but the bokeh was done in camera. I used Topaz Adjust on the cactus and flowers, with one of the preset filters: Detail Strong, mostly to make the edges of the flowers stand apart from the background. I used my own photo from a walk around my neighborhood. This was just a cluster of prickly pear cactus in bloom.

Zig Ziglar made the world a better place. We’ll all miss him. I love listening to his wisdom.

My photo is of the First Baptist Church in downtown Phoenix, which was built in 1929 but abandoned after a bad fire in the early 1980s. I didn’t do much to the photo except straighten it up and add a dark background frame.
